Passage: Mark 11:1–11
- Listen
- Downloads
- Context
- Marks Jesus’ final entrance into Jerusalem; leads up to his crucifixion
- Sends the disciples to get the colt; recognition of Jesus’ divine foreknowledge
- Scene contrasts the rest of Mark where Jesus tried to stay obscure; now he enters boldly
- The Kingly Procession
- Riding on a colt instead of walking in seems to lay claim to some authority
- Never been ridden: suitable for sacred purpose
- Fulfills Zechariah 9:9
- Disciples saddle colt with their own garments- allusion to 2 Kings 9:12-13: crowds did same for King Jehu
- The Messianic Welcome
- Laid cloaks and leafy branches on the road
- ‘Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’
- Psalm 118:25-26 (Hosanna= Save us)
- ‘Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David’
- recognition of Jesus as Messiah- in the linage of King David
- Vs. 11- anti-climactic: perhaps that sets the stage for what happens next: Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion
- Jesus comes in victory, but not the victory people expected
- Application
- We celebrate the coming of our messiah, but don’t mistake his arrival as bringing an earthly kingdom
- It’s one thing to follow Jesus when life is good, but will you follow him to the cross?
- Are you a fickle follower like the crowd; a fearful follower like Peter and the disciples; or a faithful follower like the women at the tomb?
