Passage: Mark 11:1–11

  1. Context
    1. Marks Jesus’ final entrance into Jerusalem; leads up to his crucifixion
    2. Sends the disciples to get the colt; recognition of Jesus’ divine foreknowledge
    3. Scene contrasts the rest of Mark where Jesus tried to stay obscure; now he enters boldly
  1. The Kingly Procession
    1. Riding on a colt instead of walking in seems to lay claim to some authority
    2. Never been ridden: suitable for sacred purpose
    3. Fulfills Zechariah 9:9
    4. Disciples saddle colt with their own garments- allusion to 2 Kings 9:12-13: crowds did same for King Jehu
  1. The Messianic Welcome
    1. Laid cloaks and leafy branches on the road
    2. ‘Hosanna, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’
      1. Psalm 118:25-26 (Hosanna= Save us)
    3. ‘Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David’
      1. recognition of Jesus as Messiah- in the linage of King David
    4. Vs. 11- anti-climactic: perhaps that sets the stage for what happens next: Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion
    5. Jesus comes in victory, but not the victory people expected
  1. Application
    1. We celebrate the coming of our messiah, but don’t mistake his arrival as bringing an earthly kingdom
    2. It’s one thing to follow Jesus when life is good, but will you follow him to the cross?
    3. Are you a fickle follower like the crowd; a fearful follower like Peter and the disciples; or a faithful follower like the women at the tomb?
