Passage: Nehemiah 10:1–39

  1. The Covenant
    1. 9:38—binding agreement—covenants were common legal documents in the ancient world
      1. affixing their seals
    2. 10:29—covenant language—covenants of the ancient world between two parties contained an oath and a curse

 

  1. The People
    1. Priests, Levites, and leaders are mentioned by name (vv. 1-27)—“The point seems to be that each individual has a responsibility to accept for himself or herself the values which characterize the whole” (H.G.M. Williamson)
    2. Levites— designated to work in the temple with the priests
      1. It starts with the Leadership—if the church leaders are not seeking to be godly then the church is in serious trouble
    3. V. 28ff—inclusive of all the people
      1. All individuals have a commitment before God

 

  1. The Commitment
    1. Vs. 29-39- All the areas of commitment relate back to specifics of God’s law in the Old Testament
      1. *Our moral compass must be grounded in God’s law, the Scriptures
    2. Vs. 30- not give our daughters to the people around us… why?
      1. Raising children to continue in the faith
    3. Vs. 31—honoring the Sabbath—setting aside time for God
    4. Vs. 32ff—commitment to tithe- give to God’s house and God’s people

 

  1. The Present Day Christian’s Commitment
    1. Is Jesus your Lord? What does that mean to you?
    2. Commit to raising children in the faith
    3. Commit to making time for God; consistent church attendance; personal devotions
    4. Commit your lifestyle to honoring God- your language, attitude, habits, relationships
    5. Commit to supporting the church and ministries

 

  1. Reflection
    1. How are you doing in your faith? Where do you need to recommit?
